The magnificent tale of Bateel

Bateel is an ancient Arabic name for the young offshoot of a date palm tree, flourishing majestically from the desert sands. Beneath the tree’s crown appears the date fruit, wonderfully sweet, and growing amidst harsh conditions where other plants would fail. This is why our story is one of sun and sand; of tradition and tenacity; of hospitality and delight.

The birthplace of Bateel

Our story starts in Bateel’s palm groves at Al Ghat, nestled in a fertile oasis in the historic green valleys of the Tuwayq Mountains, Saudi Arabia. Here conditions are ideal for date farming, with high temperatures and plentiful irrigation supply – in fact, the area is named for the sound of running water. This is where Bateel’s premium dates were first nurtured and today over 50,000 date trees produce an unrivalled selection of more than 20 varieties.

The date connoisseurs

For thousands of years, the legendary date fruit has been an important source of nutrition, a symbol of hospitality and an emblem of a proud tradition of culture. Bateel has transformed this ancient and noble fruit into a luxury brand and a unique gourmet experience, delighting connoisseurs around the world. Today, we offer an extensive collection of premium dates. We also skilfully use their unique attributes as the basis for many of our signature products and dishes.

There are approximately 600 varieties of dates on the market today. Here is a closer look at some of our finest:

Dates nurtured naturally

The essential element in creating a market for gourmet dates was the elevation of quality to new heights. At the heart of this creative process lies the innovation in farming and processing dates. As Bateel believes in organic produce, for the sake of nature and our customers, we keep cultivation techniques as close to nature as possible. Not only that, the first time a human hand touches a Bateel date is when the customer chooses to indulge in it.

Our culinary explorer

Jean-Luc Vila, Bateel’s Head Chef, is a global culinary visionary. His gourmet expertise is founded in the technical traditions of France, and further seasoned by his travels through places like Italy, the Caribbean, and the Far East. He is fully devoted to scouring the planet for the finest ingredients and creating innovative recipes to continuously rejuvenate Bateel’s product range. From meeting Umbrian farmers to sampling artisan delicacies across the Middle East, Jean-Luc is on a culinary journey of discovery.

A nutritious delight

Thanks to a high concentration of naturally occurring sugars, dates may very well be the world’s oldest form of candy. However, that naturally sweet package packs a powerful nutritious punch. Fat-free, cholesterol-free and sodium-free, dates provide a quick energy boost with a count of only 23 calories per fruit. Filled with an array of vitamins and minerals, and a high concentration of antioxidants, dates offer the best of both worlds: a moment of instant gratification and a step on the road to a healthy lifestyle – making them our wholesome inspiration.

The Bateel twist

By bringing together the soul of European culinary heritage and urban Arabian sensibilities - always with a contemporary twist - Bateel creates unique and delicious offerings. Date chocolates, pioneered by Bateel, are a delight to both date and chocolate lovers. They also symbolise our ongoing commitment to culinary innovation. This spirit is what keeps Bateel on the forefront of modern tastes, creating ever-new unique gourmet products and dishes out of the love for food.

Our sweet artist

Bateel is renowned in the field of gourmet chocolates: introducing the world to the delights of date chocolates, while raising the bar for chocolate artistry. Our Head Chocolatier, Bernard Charles, is responsible for an ever-evolving collection of origin chocolates, made from only the finest cocoa beans and purest cocoa butter. Born on the Island of Mauritius, he has worked with acclaimed Michelin Star chefs and won numerous awards for his intricate chocolate showpieces. Bernard continuously seeks inspiration in Arabic culture and far beyond, adding a touch of his unique artistry, to further build Bateel’s legacy in the field of chocolate.

The Bateel chocolate guide

True chocolate artistry begins with the uncompromising use of the very best ingredients the world has to offer. That is why Bateel is committed to searching and sourcing the finest ingredients. We prefer to partner with small family producers who use organic methods, providing prime quality products through ethical means. Then our chocolatiers love to experiment with new combinations of cocoa beans and exotic ingredients to create the most delicious chocolates. The result? An exceptional collection, guided by the spirit of innovation.

Our Journey to Italy

Our chefs find the central Italian region of Umbria a constant source of culinary inspiration. Blessed as it is with natural riches, the province has held on to its ancestral rural values and offers the finest specialty products for those seeking authentic taste experiences. Bateel sources an array of artisanal and wholesome goods from family-owned estates in the Italian countryside. This vast area of rolling hills, fertile plains and enchanted woodlands is home to some of Italy’s finest and most authentic culinary prizes – and now ours too.

Celebrating Mediterranean fare, curated by Bateel

Café Bateel invites you to discover Mediterranean cuisine with a distinct difference. Our menu embodies a rich culinary journey that begins with our chefs traveling the world to source authentic ingredients. They then create sophisticated and wholesome dishes made from the finest ingredients. Savour one of our signature dishes, enhanced with our Umbrian extra virgin olive oil – Bateel’s interpretation of the traditional Couscous Salad.

A warm welcome

At Bateel, extending a warm welcome is more than just an admired trait – it is a matter of identity. Honouring the tradition of Bedouin hospitality, Bateel’s signature qahwa is lovingly prepared, served in a traditional Ddallah flask and accompanied by our beloved Rhutab Kholas dates that sweeten the palate between sips. We invite you to enjoy this unique experience…

Authentic Italian pasta

Pasta comes in a kaleidoscope of shapes, styles and sizes. There are known to be more than 300 types and each possesses particular characteristics and interacts with ingredients in different ways. Therefore, the matching of sauces to pasta types is deeply rooted in Italian traditions and rules have emerged for which are best suited to vegetables, creams or seafood. Since Bateel lives to push boundaries, we have carefully selected our pasta line for both originality and versatility.

Discover a Bateel bakery speciality

The Bateel bakery offers a tempting selection of breads, artisanal cakes and Viennoiseries, inspired by traditional French recipes. Discover our signature date bread, inspired by traditional raisin bread, but made with pecans and dates. Pecans are high in healthy unsaturated fat. Add dates to the mix, also remarkably rich in vitamins and minerals – and this treat becomes an even healthier one. Prepare it yourself at home, or enjoy it at our bakery, fresh out the oven every day.

Avant-garde French inspired pastries

Bateel’s chefs finesse familiar French dessert recipes with regional ingredients, offering a range of unique baked goods such as zaatar croissants and date calissons. The infusion of local influence can range from reimagining original recipes, to merely substituting natural date syrup for processed sugar, which offers both intriguing flavours and less calories. As always, the starting point is an unwavering commitment to quality and natural ingredients.

A new journey for Turkish Delight

Turkish Delight has truly delighted people around the world for centuries. It first made its way out of Turkey in 1777, when a Briton became fond of the treat during his travels and subsequently shipped some back home to England. Since then, it has reached many other countries across continents. Today, Turkish Delight has also found a home at Bateel. Here you can find nut flavoured and fruit flavoured assortments, featuring popular and premium ingredients such as Persian rosewater and dates, of course.

Bateel’s wholesome risotto

At Bateel, we are fond of enhancing traditional recipes with interesting ingredients that are flavoursome and nutritious. We invite you to try our signature risotto: a Bateel twist on the traditional Italian dish, which replaces rice with farro – a type of ancient wheat grain, high in fibre – to cut down on starch and give the dish a light, nutty flavour.

A Bateel emporium in Dubai

We recently opened our first flagship store in Dubai on The Walk, JBR, representing a new era in our history. The spacious new venue, covering 7,000 square feet, is the first in the world to bring the three Bateel concepts together under one roof – the boutique, café and bakery. Customers are invited to discover a unique epicurean experience, with an extensive selection of premium confectionary and gift packaging, fine food products, artisanal bakery items and signature gourmet dishes.

An invitation to discover

Our odyssey in pursuit of the finest culinary experiences started in Al Ghat, with reinventing and elevating the date to a luxury product. Since then, over the past 25 years, it has taken us all around the world and led to an ever-growing range of gourmet products and signature dishes. Today, we cordially extend an invitation to you to discover the difference. Whether at our flagship store, any of our outlets around the world, or even online, embark with us as we continue on an exceptional journey of culinary inspiration and discovery. Bon voyage, and bon apetit!
