“When considering new designs, we have to ensure that it’s not only unique but also contemporary in its aesthetics and reflects a sense of occasion,” explains Ajit Indulkar, Creative Director at Bateel International. “Depending on the materials preferred, design development can take several months. Once the sketch is finalised on paper, we then explore and review different production prototypes that would be compatible. The entire process can take upwards of six months from drawing board to delivery.”
To create a lasting impression, the choice of raw materials is key and wood, mirrored glass and eco-friendly paperboard and cartons are sourced from all over the world, including the United Arab Emirates, Peru, China, Taiwan and Vietnam. The production process is an important aspect too, with Bateel designers having to consider gravure or offset printing depending on the materials used, special coloured foils used in designs, embossing or debossing effects and even sleek metal for logo art.
SIGNATURE GIFT BOXES
The Bateel Signature Gift Collection features elegant packaging that’s inspired by timeless tradition, arts and culture, and nature. Whether it’s swirling Arabesque patterns or textured patterns, every range evokes a sense of wonder.
A highlight from the Signature Collection includes the Safi range. “Our Peru wood boxes are incredibly unique, with most of our designs in this series involving hand painting on glass that starts with a reverse printing process. This involves imprinting an outline of the design on the reverse side of glass, before a Bateel artist brings the scene to life using skillful painting techniques, where each stroke masterfully applied by hand.
“Some designs also feature the application of precious gold leaf, which is done as the very last step before the glass is enveloped in a special protective material. The glass is then melded to the premium, thin wood, creating a work of art that is ready to be gifted,” explains Indulkar.
